Introducing the Pantone colors of the year

Welcome Rose Quartz and Serenity! This year, Pantone chooses a softer take on the color(s) of the year.

These two colors are pastel hues, Rose Quartz being a light pink hue and Serenity being a light blue hue. At first, I must admit I was surprised by the announcement of the Pantone colors of the year. Why you ask?  When I think of these colors I think baby boy or baby girl.  I thought to myself, did Pantone choose these colors because it appears that we are having a baby boom?

Then I looked up the meaning of two colors selected. Rose Quartz is a natural stone that resembles unconditional love and is often referred to as a heart stone. The light pink color evokes the feeling of security, love and passion. We can often relate the color Serenity or “light blue” to the color of the sky which relates to endless opportunities, calm and stillness.  If you combine these two colors (it is the first time Pantone has introduced two colors in one year), perhaps we can relate their significance to the world we are living in. These two hues project the mindset or feeling of calm, stillness and love.  Without being too political, to me it seems timely and appropriate for the times in which we are living. It is a reminder that love will overcome any challenges presented in our daily lives (and the world).

“As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent. Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.”

As we reflect on 2015 and leap forward to 2016, it is always fun to look forward to new trends and to romanticize about new beginnings in the new year ahead. We are loving the fun fashion ideas, jewelry trends and interior design inspirations inspired by the Pantone colors of the year.

Mercury Glass, Mistletoe and Snowflakes

mercury glass trees

It is such an honor to be invited into our clients’ homes during the holiday season to help them prepare and decorate for this magical, festive season.

We are decorating for a few of our dear clients this week and we have been busy researching for the latest trends and fun holiday décor for the season ahead.

Although I appreciate the current trends and inspirations via Pinterest and my favorite magazines, I do have my favorite holiday décor items that are my go to decorations.  To know me is to know I really don’t duplicate the same design twice, be it interior design, holiday décor or even a meal for that matter. I may use the same concept but I am always tweaking my design, meal or whatever I am doing based on how I am feeling that day. I love to layer and adjust items until I feel it is just right.

One of my favorite go to holiday décor items includes mercury glass (love it in all forms).  I think I love it because I love vintage inspired EVERYTHING. It makes me feel like it tells a story and when the light hits it just right, it is dazzling and it just makes me so happy!

paper snowflakes

I am pretty smitten with snowflakes this season. The hand cut snowflakes at Roger’s Garden are amazing and I am OBSESSED!  They are so cool and unique and I just love the individual character they each have.

mistle toe

Well, mistletoe is a classic and I never get tired of it.  It looks so great paired with mercury glass, too, don’t you think?

Off to decorating and other fun stuff…

Happy Designing!

Sérendipité’s Guide to the Most Fabulous Thanksgiving

A gorgeous table-scape by Ella Claire

A gorgeous table-scape by Ella Claire

What is more fabulous on Thanksgiving other than abundance of food, great friends and family?  Well, you must know by now my favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal is the planning and décor.  I love making lists and doing my research on the most delicious menu ideas and what will make my dining table the foreground of the delicious meal I am planning to serve for my beloved guests.

Many of you know my deep love for entertaining and table décor.  Truly, these details in my planning come straight from my heart.  I guess you can say cooking and entertaining is my love language.  This year we will be celebrating Thanksgiving in Fort Worth, Texas with my sweet daughter Haley.  Haley and I will be sharing our love for cooking together as we will host her few college besties, their parents and of course my hubby, George.  This will be Haley’s first Thanksgiving hosting and I can’t wait to be her sous chef.

Of course, I cannot help but make a list or two (or three) of recipes I would like to try and how we can decorate for this special day.  I like to do a process of elimination to help me arrive at, what I consider - a perfect menu.

I have a few décor ideas I would love to share and a secret tip I love to do to make my table extra special.

As we all know, entertaining can be expensive.  I believe that there are splurge items you cannot skimp on.  Many of these are details that come straight from the heart that really only take time to reflect on.  One of my favorite details on the decorated dining table is the name place card.  Sometimes I like to clip herbs from my herb garden and tie them together with twine to a simple note card.  My most favorite place card idea is taking a simple place card and writing the guest’s name and one thing I love about that guest and why.  I love tying these heartfelt cards to a pumpkin with twine and placing them on each place setting.  My guests love this too.

VIP tour with Ann Sacks

Fall in Portland Oregon

I am overwhelmed and humbled by the amazing experience I had this past weekend.

I was invited by my fabulous sales rep and designer friend, Sophie, at Ann Sacks (an artisan tile company owned by Kohler) to participate in the Ann Sacks VIP factory tour in Portland, Oregon.  I have to be honest, I did not know what to expect on this trip but with my recent mindset to “show up” with an open heart and mind and to let go of any expectations, I cannot begin to share how truly amazed and overwhelmed I was by the graciousness of every person I met along the way.  I have so much to share about this journey and I don’t know where to begin because it is all so good!

Upon my arrival at The Nines boutique hotel, I was greeted with lovely people and impressed with the very hip and chic décor of this hotel. My stay was first class and I slept like a princess.

Our first evening included a meet and greet with champagne, canapes and a very warm welcome from Ted Chappell, the president of Ann Sacks, and of course his amazing team.  I had fantastic conversation with all of the Ann Sacks team (Diane, Dee Dee, Ashleigh, Jennifer, Lea, and Kaycee - love you girls!). The night was so much fun and filled with great conversation, lovely ambiance and a delicious dinner to follow at Nobel Rot.

The following day we traveled in style in a luxury van to Sokol Blosser winery and had an educational, inspiring and super fun day learning about new products, trends, and the Kohler story.  We also had team collaboration in our round table discussion.  At the end of our day, we were treated to a wine tour of Sokol Blosser, wine tasting and a 5 course dining event in the tasting room that was so decadent and magical!

It can be overwhelming and perhaps intimidating to be in the same room as 15 other incredibly talented interior designers but to my surprise, I had a special connection with each and every one of these super talented and very successful designers across the country and Canada.  I learned so much form each one of these talents and I seriously feel like I have made 15 new friends, I cannot again express how thankful I am for this.

Not only do I have a new perspective on how amazing Ann Sacks is and how special their artisan tile collectins are but the Kohler Company itself is so impressive and unbelievable.

I left Oregon craving a few more days and saddened to leave my 15 new designer friends and all of the amazing people that make Ann Sacks the amazing company that it is.

Autumn Table Settings & Etiquettes

If you follow our blog regularly, you may have noticed from previous blog posts that WE LOVE fall!  And (almost) as much as we adore fall, we love table décor.

Fall is a busy time of year for us at Sérendipité as we are helping our dear clients prepare for the holiday seasons ahead. Although we love any opportunity to dress the table, fall is our favorite theme and most of our clients request that we help them dress their tables for the upcoming fall festivities.

drapey tablecloth.jpg

Some may think that you only have to decorate for a particular holiday.  I find that creating a table scape that can transition through the season for family brunches, dinners or happy hour gatherings brings the warmth of the season and makes your home feel festive and happy.

We wanted to share a few etiquette tips and décor that may inspire you for the season.

Back to School

Fall Leaves

It is that time of year again, back to school.  This is one of my favorite times of year because it always feels like a time of renewal for me.  It is almost as if it is a fresh start! I always think of this time of year as my “New Year”.  It is about this time where I always feel this overwhelming desire to nest or purge household items (kind of similar to the mind set “in with the new, out with the old”). I always get a new planner this time of year and I love to spend much time looking ahead, making plans and looking forward to the fall months ahead.

Dreaming about Fall shoes and wardrobe ideas.

Shimmer Toe- Heels from Anthropologie

I Romance the ideas of fall clothing and styling, festive and earthy meals and lastly, the shift in the weather.  Do I dare say, I am so excited for the time change? I know I have time here but oh how I love the words “fall back” when it comes to changing the clocks.

Happy (early) Fall!

Never Ending Summer

We are so enjoying the warm, long days of summer and do not want it to end!  What better way to keep summer alive than with a color inspiration board of a favorite summer color palette. Buttery, canary yellows mixed with turquoises and sea-blue teals is so fresh and speaks summer year-round!  We have been noticing a trend of this fun color combo lately, not only in interiors but also on exteriors.  Taking a stroll at the beach this weekend I noticed a few front porches with this color combo.  It made me want to curl up on their Adirondack chairs and read a book – all day long!

Gold...is the New Black?!

Marble and gold kitchen

As we are working on a few new projects we have been doing loads of research for what is new and what our clients are really craving in their renovations.

In my research for finishes my eye keeps gravitating towards the soft gold lighting and door hardware.  I am so excited about this design trend because my interior point of view is typically soft, classic and timeless. I enjoy layering subtle hues and the soft gold metals are so rich and sophisticated which make for a very timeless look.

Grey, white and salmon chevron bowl with gold accents

My favorite accent colors to use with gold are salmon hues, cream and the ever classic white marbles such as calacatta borghini.  I will also never grow tired of the classic combination of black and gold.

Champagne-ing in France

One of my favorite things is Champagne!  On my travels to France this past week, with my daughter Haley, we had a fantastic time sightseeing, tasting the lovely foods of Paris and we took a super fun cooking class at La Cuisine Paris

French Cheese
charcuterie

Being a champagne lover, I have to say experiencing champagne tasting in a small town outside of Reims was the highlight of my trip.  We stayed at Le Château de Rilly, “a privileged location, between Reims and Epernay, in the heart of the Champagne vineyard created in an old 18th century Champagne house.”

Le Chateau de Rilly

The experience at Le Château de Rilly was so special.  I loved the authentic décor, wonderful hospitality of the staff and the delicious five-course dinner. It felt as if we were eating in a private dining room. It was so very special for Haley and I.

We tasted champagne in the local’s homes (seriously we tasted champagne in the wine makers living rooms!). My favorite experience was at Didier Herbert Champagne, the champagne was so delicious. One of my favorite selections from Didier Herbert was La Grande Reserve Premier Cru, which had notes of caramel and vanilla. I will never forget the taste of this particular champagne and this wonderful, once in a lifetime travel experience with my daughter.

Jim included us in every decision of construction and design and was hands on in the process with us.  We carefully selected each textile and thought through every design element and detail as a team.  This home was a year in the making and we are tickled about the final presentation and feel so blessed to have been a part of this very exciting design journey.

I recently had the exciting opportunity to talk with Monya, the owner and creator of Plush Pumpkin. What an inspiring and super talented gal! She is based out of St. Paul, Minnesota and her company Plush Pumpkin was established in 2002.  Her idea was to create gorgeous table designs and from this she has turned the concept of a simple pumpkin into a masterpiece.

I was first drawn to these amazing, plush, velvet pumpkins when I discovered them in my favorite season, Fall, at Roger’s Gardens in Newport Beach. Then I learned that Monya not only designs gorgeous velvet pumpkins yet she has added velvet acorns, mushrooms and hearts to her collection. She really won me over when I saw her stunning Metallic Linen and Italian Lambskin Collections.  I cannot describe how much I love her work, each pumpkin is a work of art and they make me SO HAPPY…okay, so maybe I am obsessed!!

For those who read my blog, you are aware of the upcoming event “Chairs for Charity” supporting the Ronald McDonald House Charities, Orange County.  I do not want to give too much away about the chair I designed for this event but let’s just say Plush Pumpkin adds the perfect kiss to my overall design and concept. Monya, generously donated or should I say “gifted” us with some of her GORGEOUS metallic linen pumpkins that perfectly complement our Chairs for Charity chair design.

More photos to follow!

A big thank you, again, to Monya of Plush Pumpkin, we are so thankful for your generosity!

Awaking and Stillness...the balance

Today I was very inspired by my Yoga instructor Carla, at Be the Change.

I was called to yoga this morning and it proves my theory, we are magically always placed in the perfect moment.  I often try to remember this when I hit every red light, have an extraordinary encounter or when the wind nudges me to take a deeper inhalation.  I thought I would share a quote that was gifted to me this morning in Shavasana.

“The practice of mindfulness is very simple.

You stop, you breathe, and you still your mind.

You come home to yourself so that you can enjoy the here and now moment.

All the wonders of life are already here.

They’re calling you. If you can listen to them,

You will be able to stop running.

What you need, what we all need, is silence.

Stop the noise in your mind in order for the

Wondrous sounds of life to be heard.

Then you can begin to live your life authentically and deeply.”

Extended Living

Indoor Outdoor Living

It seems more and more these days we have requests from our clients to help design outdoor living spaces.  Extending the functional square footage of a home to overflow to the outdoors is becoming an inspiring trend.

Indoor Outdoor Living

Everyone loves pool parties and family BBQ’s but beyond that, think year-round al fresco dining, relaxing on a lounge chair next to a soothing water feature, warming up and toasting s’mores by a cozy fire pit, and watching Sunday football with a group of friends on a big screen under a shaded patio.

Indoor Outdoor Living

Some of our favorite outdoor furnishings come from the dreamy Henry Hall Designs and the more affordable Sunset West.

Mixed Matters

wall collage

What do we love right now? Collages! Objects grouped together on a wall are a great way to give guests a glimpse into who you are. The fun thing is, there are so many unique options when creating a collage.  You can group like objects or diverse objects.  You can make your collage symmetrical or asymmetrical. Collages are no longer just devoted to pictures and frames. We love to use a variety of different frame styles and throw in some eclectic artifacts and amusing objects.

Today we had our professional art hanger hang a beautiful collage in the design parlour (see image above). Let us know what you think!
